Weekly Update 25 15.1.24

15 March 2024 (by admin)

Dear Fairfields Community,

It has been a lovely week with the children in school and great to see lots of science going on for science week. Thank you for all your Comic Relief (Red Nose Day) contributions too. The school council will help count up the money and report back to you next week on how much we raised for this chosen charity. They will also let you know their favourite joke from the shortlisted ones chosen from each classroom!

Understanding and Responding to Anxiety talk

Just a reminder that on Monday 25th March, from 6.00-8.00pm, the Primary Behaviour Service will be in the school hall to talk about anxiety in children and how we as adults can help children to manage this. Anxiety is a growing concern in children and we are more frequently talking to parents about this issue for our pupils. Please do come along if you can make it. It would be great to see you there- and we will keep you refreshed with drinks and biscuits too!

Science week

This week we enjoyed Science week and the theme 'Time'. The children looked at different periods of time, how we measure time and asked questions about the past and future. We will hold a science fayre in the summer term, so you can come and see our work and ideas about 'time'.  It was a great experience for the children to ask questions and be curious! Thank you Miss Young for organising this.

Lost Property

We have a growing amount of lost property under the canopy in the allocated boxes. If you are missing anything, please come and take a look. At the end of the term, we will need to empty the lost property ready for the summer term so please do come and look for anything your child may have lost.

Rugby

Following our success last week, we have 2 more rugby matches coming up in the next two weeks. If your child is in year 5 or 6 and in the rugby team, they should have bought a letter home with more information about these, please return the permission slips to school as soon as possible. Due to these matches, there will be no rugby club for the rest of term. Rugby club for all KS2 (Year 3 – 6) will resume the first week back after Easter.

Football club

Letters have gone out to year 6 football club members to invite them to a tournament on Friday 22nd March.  Please could slips be returned as soon as possible.  An email copy was sent as well.

Times Tables

Well done to year 3 for their efforts in the third Top of the  Rocks competition. We ended in 3rd place but were very pleased to see the average score increase by 20+ in both classes. Little and often practice is effective so well done to Anahita, Edward, Maahir, Martin, Emily, Oliver, Aarsh, Penny, Pranav, Theodora, Jenson and Ruaridh for logging in on 4+ days over the past week to practise. Year 3 are now starting to do weekly 1 minute paper tests so they can work their way through the different times tables systematically.  We are ordering some TTRockstars stickers for those who score 19 or 20 so, if your child comes home wearing a sticker, they have done very well.

Next week, it is the turn of year 4. They won both events last time. A check of the current scores shows that St John's are first with 15 points, St Bede's are second with 11 points and Fairfields are 3rd with 10 points. If we can pick up another 6 points next week it will change positively! Come on, year 4!

Updates from year groups

FS

Foundation Stage have had a 'roar-some' science week this week learning all about dinosaurs!! We found out that dinosaurs were around 66 million years ago and became extinct before humans walked the Earth! They had a super time being Nature Detectives in the school playground searching for minibeasts. We found centipedes, earthworms, woodlouse and more! Well done, Foundation Stage! Have a lovely weekend!

Year 1

We had a fantastic visit to Marwell Zoo on Wednesday. We're sure you heard all about it! A huge thank you to everyone who volunteered to help. Next week in DT we will be making a zoo structure for an animal. Could we ask that the children bring in any small cardboard boxes you may have, no bigger than a small cereal box, or a strong piece of cardboard, by next Wednesday please.

Year 2

Well done children on another great week in school and a fantastic assembly! We hope the adults watching enjoyed it as much as the children did performing. Next week we are completing reading and maths tests to help update each child's termly assessment, there will be one each day from Monday - Thursday. If your child is not in on one or more of these days, they will have to catch up the missed test(s) on another day so please ensure your child is in school unless unwell. Thank you!

Year 3

This week year 3 have been exploring time in the context of growing plants for Science Week. Children have made some excellent observations and produced work they can really be proud of. Well done year 3! Can we please ask parents who haven't returned their swimming forms yet to please do so by Monday 25th March so that we can make all necessary arrangements. Thank you.

Year 4

This week year 4 enjoyed learning about 'the future' in science. They created their own house, cars or schools. We have been learning about deforestation and the children created posters to raise awareness about it. In PE, we have been teaching football and as a year group, we are really pleased at the behaviour and skills of the cohort. Well done year 4!

Year 5

The children in year 5 really enjoyed exploring some space-themed lyrics linked to our poetry unit this week. They also experimented with different mix-media techniques in art in preparation for creating our final piece of work inspired by the artist Vladimir Kush. To showcase all our learning from this term, we would like to invite parents into school on Thursday 21st March between 14:45 and 15:05. If you can make it, please come to the office to sign in and a member of staff will bring you up to our classrooms. Looking forward to seeing you there.

Year 6

Year 6 have had an exciting week, beginning with one class going to Costello to play badminton. It has been Science Week and within our overall topic of time, the children have enjoyed researching fossils and the Big Bang. Each class has created their own poster board incorporating research and input from every pupil. A reminder that next Thursday (21st), the children and their Foundation Stage buddies will be out on a Spring walk, so please ensure that your child comes in with their coat and suitable footwear if there is wet weather.

The café is open to come and meet other parents and to chat to our Home/School Link Worker, Tracey, every Monday from 8.40am, and on a Friday from 2.50pm until 3.10pm.
