Weekly Update 26

6 May 2023 (by admin)

Dear parents and carers,

What an incredible way to end the week!  The Coronation Parade was a huge success – the children loved taking part!  Thank you to Tracey Deemer, who worked with each class to create their theme which included providing costumes for almost every child!

We are so lucky to have such creative partners.  This also includes Becky and Nick from Scratch Built Productions who are based at Proteus Theatre.  Overnight they painted the gates gold to have a permanent memory from the event.  They also provided the special guest, King Alfred, to mark the occasion.  The whole event demonstrated the strength of the community!

Thank you also to the PTA who sold baked goods and popcorn after the parade.

The event will feature on the BBC South Today news at 6:45pm this evening.

Upcoming Tests for Year 6 Pupils

Next week is the start of the test period for pupils in Year 6.  They have worked so hard throughout the year to prepare for the standard assessment tests (SATs).   On behalf of our whole school community, we wish them the best of luck!

School Reports

You should have received your child’s school report yesterday.  They were given to your child to take home.  Please do let us know if you did not get one for your child.

Top Tips for Parenting – Observing or Evaluating?

As a school, we continue to refine how we communicate with children around their behaviour.  One of the most recent pieces of work I have been signposted to is around Nonviolent Communication.  A key part of this is not making a judgement on a behaviour and instead stating what is happening and asking them to stop.   For example, if a child is climbing up on a table, saying “you are climbing up really high and it is making me worried!”, rather than saying “you are being dangerous and naughty!”.

I have noticed that this tends to keep things calmer and does not cause additional anger, frustration, and distress into a situation.

Have a wonderful coronation weekend and I look forward to seeing you back in school on Tuesday 9th May.
