About Us

Opened in 1887, Fairfields Primary is the oldest school in Basingstoke, Hampshire. Parents, grandparents and great grandparents all have fond memories of their time at our school.

Everything that we do is based on our four Core Values; Love, Respect, Honesty and Celebration. Our aim is develop resilient and confident children who are highly skilled and able to adapt to an ever changing landscape. These are also outlined below.  For that reason, we have written a unique curriculum based on real experiences and high quality literature.

The pupils at our school play a huge part in school improvement.  Our School Council consists of pupils in every year group who are voted in by their peers and who help to shape the direction of the school. Please see our School Council page with updates of their latest priorities.

Finally, we work closely with parents who have taken the decision to invest in our school by enrolling their children. We believe that parents are the most crucial element of providing an effective team around a child and we therefore expect them to be involved in school life, at every level.

Our Vision

To prepare the children of today to thrive and meet the challenges of tomorrow, by developing independence and resilience through a forward thinking and evolving curriculum, proudly reflecting our diverse community, inspiring and celebrating all achievements.

Our Mission

We are a vibrant, diverse and inclusive community, fostering a culture of learning and resilience, through a creative and pupil-centered curriculum where children are encouraged to take risks and learn from their mistakes, all within a supportive environment.

Our Ethos
  1. All members of the school community will treat each other with mutual respect,
  2. All children to be supported and challenged to achieve the best that they can which will be celebrated by the school community,
  3. All children will enjoy an exciting and inspiring educational experience,
  4. All children will understand how they can show love towards members of their community and have access to a safe and secure learning environment and good quality pastoral care,
  5. All children will develop the skills that will enable them to be successful citizens in a modern world. This includes being an honest citizen,
  6. All children will recognise their value within, and contribution to their local, national and international communities as global citizens.

Each year we develop an action plan to improve areas identified from a range of information including performance data.  Please visit our 'School Development Priorities' page under the 'Parents' tab on the website to learn about our school development plan for this year and the review of last year.

Year 6 mobile phone use
22/01/2026 9:48 PM
Dear parents and carers,
Smart phones and social media usage amongst children continues to generate significant media and political interest. I've previously communicated Fairfields approach to smart phones, in line with primary schools throughout Basingstoke, which will take effect from this September.
Unfortunately, I am regularly receiving concerns from parents/carers relating to issues outside school on social media/messaging apps between children in year 6. Having received multiple concerns in the past several days, I felt compelled to write a heartfelt message from myself as a Headteacher to ask for your support.
It saddens me that children are being impacted by this issue, and that I have very little control over it. I can help educate children about the safe use of the internet, and we do that constantly in school through assemblies, computing lessons, PSHE lessons, whole school half termly e-safety work, safeguarding projects throughout the year and in responding to issues when they arise.
However, it is outside of my control that some children have access to mobile phones, access to apps (some of which are not appropriate for their age), how often they use these phones and apps, how they are monitored and what restrictions are on them. This is the responsibility of parents/carers.
Having a son in year 6 myself, I do fully understand the pressures of children wanting to have a smart phone and access to social media/apps. Like you, I have had many a tricky conversation in my own house about it. It is something we did not have to navigate in our own childhood (if you are as old as me!) and there is no 'handbook' for guidance.
However, I strongly feel that as parents, working together is the only way forward to protect our children. The pressures on parents come because 'everyone has a mobile' and 'everyone has the app'. If parents can work together to stop children in year 6 using WhatsApp (which is for children of 13 years +), we would not need to battle the pressure which is upon us.
Technology continues to provide us with new ways to connect, but with all these issues which are impacting children, I question whether WhatsApp and other similar social networking sites/apps are the right way to be connecting our children right now. Even if you feel that your child has the emotional maturity to use these sites safely themselves, this does not stop what other people can expose your child to.
As parents, we all must make decisions on what we consider are in the best interests of our children. I would strongly encourage you all to consider removing WhatsApp from your child's phone, or at the very least, your child being part of WhatsApp groups. Please talk to each other as parents about other ways to connect your children which are safer. You have the ability within your child's smart phone to restrict functionality and access to websites and apps. Please monitor what your child can access, and when they can access their device.
Thank you for your support and I hope my email is taken with the good intent it is written in. I desperately want to ensure, as I know you do, that your children are happy and enjoying childhood without these additional pressures to navigate when they are not ready.
Kind regards
Mrs Vicky Hopkins
Road Safety Patrol
22/01/2026 9:29 AM

Thank you to the year 6 Junior Road Safety Officers (JRSO's) who helped me patrol parking around our school this morning. They had a lot of fun handing out stickers to children who had walked to school but were suprised by the number of cars parking on double yellow lines. We would like to remind everyone that there is free parking available at Castons Car Park between 8.30 am to 8.50 am and 3.05 pm to 3.25 pm. We will continue to patrol the roads around the school throughout the year to help improve parking and the safety of children. Thank you for your support.

FS Superhero Day Tuesday 27th January
20/01/2026 4:00 PM

We are now having our Superhero Day on Tuesday 27th January due to a clash of dates.  Children can come to school dressed as a superhero or someone who helps us, e.g. fireman, nurse, doctor, teacher, vet, etc.  If you do not already have something to wear, please do not buy anything extra, as we have some costumes in school that the children can wear for the day.  We will also be making our own ‘Supertato’ superheroes on this day and ask if you could put a potato in your child’s bag for this activity.
