Phonics
With the Phonics Screening Check approaching, here are some additional links to support your child. Practising little and often can make a big difference, and these materials will help familiarise them with the format of the check—especially reading real and “alien” (nonsense) words.

Handwriting
Handwriting is a vital part of learning in Year 1 because it lays the foundation for confident, fluent writing as children move through school. When pupils develop strong letter formation early on, it supports their spelling, sentence construction and overall ability to express ideas clearly.
At our school, we follow the RWI handwriting scheme to ensure consistency and high-quality practice, and families can access a wide range of supporting videos through the links provided so children can continue to build these skills at home.

Autumn Term 2025: Belonging
Toy Hunt!
This term in Year 1 all of our learning will be based around the theme ‘Belonging’. Over this first term we will be thinking about what it means to belong in our class and school.
On Monday 7th September we received an unusual message in the classroom which sent us on a mystery hunt around the school! We followed the clues and eventually we found toys who wanted to belong in our class with us! Buzz Lightyear and Woody have been making themselves at home in Year 1.
We drew a map of our journey following the clues around the school. Then we looked at and drew some of the other toys in Toy Story.
