Weekly Update 22

18 March 2023 (by Rebecca Thompson (2727rt))

Dear parents and carers,

It has been a strange Science Week for many of us due to Industrial action. Altogether, twelve teachers in the school took part in the strike days which meant that the school was closed for two days. Thank you to all the children who took part in the online sessions, and I do hope they enjoyed the science learning through the week. Thank you to Sarah Leaford, Becky Kitter and Tracey Kinchenton for also providing sessions for the children.

Talent Show for Comic Relief

Well done to all the children who took part in the show. It takes a lot of confidence to go up on stage and perform and we are so proud of them. The results of the two shows are as follows and the videos will be placed on the website by the end of next week:

Key Stage 1 and Foundation Stage

1st place – Emily from Warsaw, with her dance of the Macarena.

2nd Place – Aubrey and Helena from Rome, with their Cinderella ballet dance.

3rd place – Harry, Alice, Yeshin, Lola, Edward, Ana and Charvy from Budapest, with their dance of Shotgun by Geroge Ezra.

4th place – Riley, Zumra, Ikra, Emily, Heleena, Anastasia, Thurika and Amani from Madrid, with their dance of the Macarena.

Key Stage 2

1st place – Andrei from Kathmandu, with his amazing piano playing.

2nd place – Gabriel and Mya from Ankara, with their vocal performance of Bloody Mary by Lady Gaga.

3rd place – Samanyu from Nairobi, with his fantastic piano playing.

4th place – Soulemane, Navilan and Rishvik from Canberra, with their singing and dancing.

Thank you also for the donations towards Comic Relief. We will announce the total raised next week.

Turkey and Syria Relief Fund

A huge thank you to everyone who was able to give a donation. We have raised £366.06 as a school. We will now approach the two families who have asked for support for relatives overseas and will provide an update next week on how this money will be used.

End of Term Spring is Sprung and Easter Celebration – Friday 31st March

To celebrate the first glimpses of spring (and to encourage it to stay) we are going to have a Springtime Trail around the playground on Friday 31st March. Parents are invited to view the Spring display boards around the playground between 3:10 and 3:45pm. The children have written Easter and Spring poems which will be on display. There will also be a QR code for you to scan with your phone linking to an Easter or Spring GIF. The PTA will also be running activities during this time to celebrate Easter. We hope that you will stay to enjoy the end of term!

Education Health Care Plans (EHCP) for pupils with Special Educational Needs.

We are increasingly receiving requests from parents asking us to apply for an EHCP for their child with additional needs. Please be aware that this process is for children who have had high external agency involvement and can take a number of months.

Unfortunately, having an EHCP for your child will not mean that your child will automatically have an additional adult to support them. This is because the first 12 hours of any plan needs to be provided from the school’s budget and from the classroom assistant. We do not receive any additional funding for pupils who have complex SEND when they receive an ECHP of 12 or less hours. Regardless of this, there is still an expectation from parents to provide an additional 1:1 adult. Currently, we have 21 children with EHCPs and a limited number of classroom assistants. In almost all cases, due to the first 12 hours coming out of the school budget, the funding we receive for the additional hours does not cover the salary of the adult.

We will continue to provide interventions as best as we can and will always vary tasks and activities for children who find areas of learning challenging. Both the Local Authority and OFSTED Inpsectors commented on the relentless positivity we have towards inclusion in our school. I hope that this helps to provide some information.  Further facts can be found https://www.hants.gov.uk/socialcareandhealth/childrenandfamilies/specialneeds/sen-pathway

Coronation Celebrations- Friday 5th May

On Friday the 5th May we will be holding a Coronation Celebration Parade in the playground. All parents and community members are invited to attend. Each class will be working on a piece to showcase as part of the parade. Parents will need to arrive at 1:30pm to be in position in the playground for the parade; which will start at 2pm. Further details will be sent out nearer the time.

Parenting Tip – Looking after your child’s brain.

Prevent your child from sustaining a serious brain injury through making sure that they always wear a helmet when riding a bike, scooter or skateboard. Consider the lengths you go to protect your mobile phone screen with glass protectors and cases? Do you apply the same effort in preventing your child from damaging their brains when using scooters, skates or bikes?

One of the causes of brain injuries is from children falling and hitting their head. When a child falls, even from standing, they can sustain a head injury. The effect of their brain hitting against the wall of their skull, is the cause of this. For more information visit: https://www.betterhealth.vic.gov.au/health/healthyliving/scooters-and-child-safety#scooter-design

For this reason, please do not bring or store scooters or bikes in the school unless your child is wearing a helmet.

Have a wonderful weekend!
